Principal’s Message 3-23-12

Posted Friday, March 23rd, 2012 by mfriebus-flaman

Dear Dooley Families,

While it seemed like a little bit of a “let-down” to have a rainy day after so many warm, sunny days, the students of Dooley School were in great spirits.  The students filled the Dooley Dollar jar and earned a PBIS all-school celebration.  We had our “March Madness” celebration from 2:00 p.m.-2:50 p.m.  Students rotated through three celebration stations: Dance Party, Spring and Sports-themed movie clips, and Board Games.

Because of concerns with the pdf files of our newsletters taking up a lot of memory space in e-mail accounts, we will be posting the Dragon Tales and ドラゴン  テールon our website.  Please click on this link to read the newsletter.

I hope you have a wonderful Spring Break.

See you on April 2!

Academic Excellence Award

Posted Monday, February 6th, 2012 by mfriebus-flaman

This morning Dooley School was recognized for receiving the Academic Achievement Award from the Illinois State Board of Education. The Illinois Honor Roll celebrates the accomplishments of Illinois public schools that are providing high quality education for all their students.

State Superintendent Chris Koch presented the awards to our school. Student Council Co-Presidents Stephen A. and Melissa V., along with staff and building administration were on hand to accept this award on our behalf.

This is the third consecutive year we have received this award. Twelve other District 54 schools were recognized as well. On behalf of Schaumburg School District 54 and the entire Dooley community, thank you to everyone (students, staff and families) for supporting our students. It is because of your commitment and hard work that we receive these acknowledgements.

Dear Dooley Families,

I hope you have been able to enjoy the nice weather.  It is hard to believe it is already the end of January.  We have some exciting events happening at school in February.  Student Council will be collecting gently used books to give to Children’s Memorial Hospital from February 6-29.  If enough books are collected, they are considering selecting a second site to give books
to as well.  Student Council has also selected February 10 as “Show Your Love for Your Favorite Decade Day.”

Our Valentine’s Day party will be on February 14 from 1:15 p.m. -2:30 p.m.

For families interested in applying for the Early Instrumental Music program, we have two parent information meetings scheduled.  Parents who are applying for their children to enter this program must attend one of these meetings.  Applications are only distributed during these meetings.  One meeting is on January 31, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.  The other meeting is on February 9, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.  Both of these meetings will be held in the library at Dooley School.

The February PTA meeting will be on February 13 at 7:00 p.m.

Japan Culture Night will be on February 24, 2012 at 6:30 p.m.

Thank you again and again for all of the support you give our school!

Dear Dooley Families,

We are just days away from the PTA’s Halloween Fun Fair.  There are still some openings for volunteers.  The time slots are for 30 minutes, and the PTA will give you a free food ticket as a thank you.  As a reminder, all of our Halloween celebrations will take place on Friday, October 28.  Monday, October 31 will be a regular school day for us.  We will not have any Halloween celebrations at school on Monday.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Principal’s Message–Summer 2011

Posted Tuesday, June 14th, 2011 by mfriebus-flaman

Dear Dooley Community,

Dooley School is closed for the summer. If you have walked or driven past the school, I am sure you have noticed that renovations are already under way.  I have been told that the crews are slightly ahead of schedule.  When you come back in August, you can look forward to seeing a new floor, a couple of new walls, and a new elevator.

I can be reached by phone or e-mail (e-mail is better) through the end of June, and then again after August 1.

I hope you have a wonderful summer!

Principal’s Message 5/25/11

Posted Wednesday, May 25th, 2011 by mfriebus-flaman

It seems like yesterday when we were welcoming you back to school.  Although there is still some time left before we leave for the summer, we are already geared up to welcome you back again in August. When you come back in August, you will notice a few changes…

Most of the teachers will stay in the same grade levels they currently teach. We have a few teachers in new positions next year, and we will be welcoming some new teachers as well.  Miss Dunne will be moving in to a 5/6 multi-age classroom and Miss Song will be taking over as our Literacy Coach.  Miss Kobari will be teaching the 5/6 dual language Japanese sections and Mr. Huffman will be coming over to us from Churchill School to teach the 5/6 dual language English sections.  Mrs. Meehan is coming to us from Stevenson School to teach kindergarten.  Mrs. Brittingham, Mrs. Date, Mrs. Kessler, Mr. Moore, Mrs. Ryba, and Ms. Suzuki will be leaving us at the end of this school year. Our assistant principal, Mrs. Fletcher, has accepted a principalship in another school district. Mr. Cropper will be going to Addams Jr. High to teach Health and PE. I know I speak for our community when I say we wish them all the best.   Mrs. Weisler will be at Lakeview and Muir Schools next year. We will have a new PE teacher, and Mrs. Geshelin will be coming to us from Collins School as our school social worker.

As you may know, our building will be undergoing some renovations this summer, including the installation of an elevator.  For this reason, our school will close for the summer at noon on June 7, 2011.  The renovations will begin right away, so we will not have any staff in the building after noon on June 7.  I will be checking messages left on the Dooley phone line regularly throughout the month of June, but the best way to contact me will be by e-mail at MarionFlaman@sd54.org.

Until then, it’s business as usual here at Dooley.  Upcoming events include:

May 26 at 7:00 p.m.—Drama Club’s play

May 27—Student Non-Attendance Day

May 30—Memorial Day (No School)

June 2 at 6:30 p.m.—Kindergarten Concert

June 3—Field Day

I hope you have a wonderful week!

Principal’s Message

Posted Friday, March 18th, 2011 by mfriebus-flaman

Dear Dooley Families,

Today, we had our second all-school PBIS celebration.  The students earned this celebration by filling the giant barrel in the office with Dooley Dollars that they had received for following the Dooley Do’s: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe. We had “Dooley Idol” show, similar to American Idol.  Each class created and performed a song that was based on a popular melody and included either the Dooley Do’s or spring break as a theme.  Every performance was wonderful and all classes heard the coveted “You’re going to Hollywood!” and received a golden ticket.

I was able to see first-hand that our students follow the Dooley Do’s even when they are not in school.  Yesterday, I had the privilege of chaperoning a group of our 5th/6th grade students in Springfield.  Our students not only followed the Dooley Do’s at each of the sites we visited, they modeled appropriate behavior for the other schools that were also visiting those sites. I received many compliments from the staff members at each of these locations on how well-mannered and polite our students are.  The bus drivers also praised our students for their excellent behavior.  Parents, you certainly have a lot to be proud of.

There are many reasons for us to be proud of our school.  I remember how proud I was of our school when Student Council raised funds to support relief for Haiti last year.  This year, not only the Student Council, but the School Leadership Team (SLT), PTA and Schaumburg Oyanokai are coming together to raise funds to help those affected by the devastation in Japan.  The week of April 4-8 will be “Hands for Japan” Week at Dooley School.  During this week, we will have several opportunities for people to contribute to the Hands for Japan fund.  The money raised will be donated to the Red Cross. We will also have some activities that will give all Dooley students the opportunity to contribute to the overall relief effort even if they are not able to contribute monetarily.  Here are the events that have been planned:

  • Monday, April 4—Hands for Japan: Students will trace their hands and make paper hands out of construction paper. These paper hands will become part of a “Hands for Japan” mural.
  • Monday, April 4—Daruma Obento Lunch (pre-order only)
  • Thursday, April 7—Walk for Japan.
  • ALL WEEK—Smencils/Smens Sale: Environmental Club will donate all proceeds from this sale to the Hands for Japan fund.
  • ALL WEEK—Origami Cards Sale: Orders will be taken for hand-made greeting cards with origami on the covers.

Some plans that have not been finalized yet are:

  • Student Council will be planning theme days during the week.
  • PTA also discussed having a special Treat Day on Tuesday, April 5.

We will send out more information about these activities when we come back from Spring Break.

I hope you have a wonderful Spring Break!

All District 54 Schools Closed Feb. 3rd

Posted Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 by Ms. Velasco

All District 54 schools and offices are closed tomorrow – Thursday, February 3, 2011 – due to the winter storm. In addition, the School Board meeting and parent conferences scheduled for February 3 have also been canceled.

Parents who are interested in rescheduling their student’s conference should contact their teacher to arrange a mutually agreed upon time over the next few weeks. District 54 plans at this time to still hold any conferences scheduled for Friday, February 4.

The decision to close school is not one we make lightly. Our top concern is whether we believe the more than 14,000 students we serve can get to school safely (whether they walk, take a bus or ride in a car).

District 54 makes every effort to keep our schools open, but circumstances beyond our control (such as snow) sometimes dictate that we close. Thank you for your understanding and support. The decision to close schools is made one day at a time
