Principal’s Message- November 30, 2018

We were excited to see our students back in their school routines and engaged in learning after a few days off.   We do have some updates to our MAP testing schedule below and several other important announcements for the month of December.

MAP Testing

The next round of MAP testing is in full swing.  We are excited to see the growth that our students have made since the fall. Each student will take both a reading and math assessment.  Most students have completed the reading portion.  Due to some glitches with the website, our 2nd grade and 3rd/4th multi-grade students will now take their reading test on Monday, December 3rd.   It is always helpful to ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep, is here on time and eats a healthy breakfast. Please see the schedule below for testing dates.

MAP Reading

Monday, December 3rd:  2nd grade, 3/4 multi-grade

MAP Math

Tuesday, December 4th: 1st grade, 3rd grade dual language, 4th grade dual language

Wednesday, December 5th:  Kindergarten, 5th grade, 6th grade

Tuesday, November 27:  2nd Grade, 3/4 multi-grade

Happiness Advantage

At the beginning of this school year, Dooley families received a copy of The Orange Frog Family Reading Guide. Beginning next week, we will spend time with our students focusing on a variety of Happiness Tactics and Habits.  You can read more about these on page 77 of your Family Reading Guide.  This week our entire building focused on practicing ‘The Doubler’.  This tactic is designed to help you control your brain chemistry by reliving a positive emotional experience by writing about it.  On page 81, your child can write about ways they will share their experiences. Stay tuned to find out what next week’s Happiness Tactic will be!

6th Grade Parent Night at Addams Junior High

Throughout the month of November, Ms. Phelan, the assistant principal at Jane Addams Junior High has visited the elementary feeder schools in preparation for next school year.  Sixth grade students received an overview of a typical day in junior high, learned about the different elective course options and extracurricular opportunities, and had an opportunity to have their questions answered.  Next year’s scheduling is around the corner, so be on the lookout for your child’s elective selection sheet. The elective course selection sheets are due back on December 14.  In addition to helping the students adjust, the junior highs are also offering a parent night to be held on Wednesday, December 12 from 6:00-7:00pm where you can come and learn about your child’s school for next year. For our Dual Language and Chinese Immersion families, there will be a presentation from 5:30-6:00pm that will provide specific information about the program your child is enrolled in.
