Due to a nationwide shortage in licensed school bus drivers, District 54 has learned that First Student does not have enough bus drivers to serve all of our routes and we will be forced to consolidate some of our current bus routes.

District 54 has been working behind the scenes to help First Student recruit additional drivers, while using substitute drivers and drivers from districts that have not yet started school. It was our hope to be able to fill the vacancies. However, while we have made progress, we are now required to eliminate some routes. Unfortunately this will result in longer bus times and more individuals on a bus.

Today, we will be sending home your child’s new bus pass, which includes the pick-up/drop-off times, bus stop and route number. In order to quickly communicate this change, all students are receiving new bus passes, even if your child’s pick-up/drop-off times, bus stop and route numbers did not change. Please note – all changes take effect on Monday, August 23.

Kindergarten students will have their new pass sent home with an older sibling (if applicable).  If your child is in kindergarten and does not have an older sibling, please come to the office to pick up your child’s bus pass.

District 54 will continue to work with First Student to address this significant labor shortage and to ensure that as applicants come forward they are fully trained to ensure the safety of our students. We apologize for this inconvenience. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions.

We appreciate your understanding and flexibility.  Please feel free to call us at 847-357-6250 if you have any questions.
