A Kinder student excited about school and the book he got

It was a highlight for us to welcome our kindergarten students this week!  Our teachers are enjoying building relationships with them and interacting over Zoom.  We are looking forward to many more exciting weeks with our newest Dragons!

This week’s highlight is Mrs. Abe’s 6th grade dual language class.  Students created slides and videos to talk through some of their peak moments this week.  Room 219 Highlights

As a reminder, there is no school on Monday, September 7th.  We hope you enjoy the long weekend!

Fall Virtual MAP Assessment

This Fall we will be continuing to test kindergarten through eighth grade students using the MAP assessment tool.  This year the computer based assessment will be administered to the students while they are in a remote environment.  The purpose of the assessment will be to inform teachers of the immediate instructional needs of students.  MAP results equip educators with key data to help personalize instruction and pinpoint individual student needs.

With this being our first time remote testing it will be important to partner with families to help this new process be as successful as possible.  If families have any technical difficulties while attempting to complete the assessment they can call our MAP hotline at: 847-357-5153.

Important Details on the Virtual MAP Assessment

  • Communication regarding the date and time of the assessment will be coming from your child’s teacher.
  • Students in grades kindergarten through second grade will begin a test session on Zoom with the teacher.  A caregiver must be present to support the child logging into Zoom and into the test session.
  • Our students in third grade through eighth grade will be proctored by a teacher via Zoom while they complete the assessment.
  • Students in grades kindergarten through second grade have 90 minutes to complete the assessment.
  • Students in third grade through eighth grade have 120 minutes to complete the assessment.
  • If your child does not complete the MAP assessment in this window the test will not be scored.
  • Please note that this data will be used to inform your child’s teacher for instructional purposes, therefore we ask that parents refrain from assisting their child with answering questions on the MAP assessment.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher for more details.  Additionally, please feel free to visit our website for Parent Resources.

District 54 Virtual Run to Read Weekend: Sept. 25-27

The year 2020 has proven to be quite an unpredictable year for all of us. For the past 16 years, the District 54 Run to Read has been a race dedicated to promoting health and wellness for all ages. With that in mind, our 17th annual Run to Read is going virtual. Run or walk anytime from Sept. 25-27 and make sure to share your photos with us by using the hashtag #54Run2Read.

All money raised this year will be donated to the D54 Foundation Crisis Fund, to provide food and other necessary supplies to District 54 families who are struggling financially during this pandemic.

As in years past, you can choose from a variety of distances. Pick the distance that works for you and map out a route near your home. If walking is more your style, pick a distance and walk it instead.

Every registrant will receive a Tshirt and a medal. To receive the Tshirt before the event, please make sure to register by Sept. 8, 2020. Any orders received after Sept. 8 will be delivered to participants as soon as possible. Tshirts and medals will be shipped to your home.

Device Support

Our Technology Department has been working to support students and staff as we all learn and work remotely. We understand that some families are experiencing slow speeds or problems with their providers, and we ask you to report that directly to your provider.

People experiencing problems with District 54 technology (Chromebooks and iPads for students) should email [email protected] so that we can troubleshoot the problem via phone or email. If the problem cannot be resolved, we have a technology drop-off program. To schedule an appointment to drop off a broken laptop, iPad or other device, you must first email [email protected].  Please do not stop by without an appointment. By making an appointment, we can abide by the rules of social distancing and ensure we have a replacement device ready for you when you arrive.

Notes from the Nurse
