Mrs. Mannina with her Kinders reading a story

We had a great first week of kindergarten.  Our newest Dragons had fun learning, playing, and making friends this week!  We are excited to see them learn and grow this year!

Our classroom highlight for the week is Mrs. Tufexis’ sixth grade dual language class.  Students in room 220 helped with our morning announcements and created a class Padlet to highlight their best moments from this week.  Room 220 Highlights

As a reminder, Schaumburg Oyanokai lunch orders are due by August 30th.  Please see below for more information.

Arrival and Dismissal

Thank you for your cooperation with our arrival and dismissal procedures.  The only area we should cross the street is at the corner of Norwood and Lowell Lanes.  This is to ensure the safety of our kids.  Parents, we ask that you follow this procedure when crossing your child.  We have seen parents crossing children in the middle of the street. This is especially dangerous with our car and bus traffic.  We would like to avoid injuries and accidents.

Run to Read

District 54 will support literacy and promote health and fitness for the young and old by participating in the 17th annual Run to Read. All proceeds for the event will be used to purchase books for classroom libraries.

Run to Read is a day of races offering something for everyone. The day begins with 100-yard and 400-yard dashes for children. Every child will receive a medal. At 9 a.m. sharp, we will start our 5K run on a USATF-certified course over mostly flat roads (see our map online at http://sd54.org/runtoread). There is also a 1-mile fun walk for adults and children alike.
Individuals who prefer to participate in the virtual option can walk or run 1-mile, 5K, 10K, kids’ sprint, or any distance you prefer during race weekend—Sept. 24-26. Wear the T-shirt during your virtual race, take a photo and tag us on social media at #54Run2Read.

District 54 COVID Mitigation Strategies to Start the 2021-2022 School Year

  • Masking: All students, staff and visitors will be required to wear masks while on District 54 provided transportation and in District 54 schools regardless of vaccination status in accordance with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s Executive Order issued yesterday, August 4, 2021. Students will be able to remove their masks during lunch/snack and while outside for PE, recess or other instructional activities.
  • Social distancing: District 54 will continue to have staff and students maintain 3-6 feet of physical distance whenever possible.
  • Symptom Screening: Parents/guardians should continue to monitor their children for symptoms of COVID-19, keep their children home if they are ill, and immediately share with their child’s school if your child or a member of your household tests positive for COVID-19. All individuals are required to stay at home while symptomatic and are encouraged to test for COVID-19. COVID-19 Symptoms include:
    • Fever or chills
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle or body aches
    • Headache
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea
  • Quarantining: The Cook County Department of Public Health has the sole authority for determining if an individual is required to quarantine and the length of quarantine. District 54 is required to report all positive cases and close contacts to the health department. In situations where students are quarantined, they will be allowed to make up all missed homework and tests.
  • Vaccination: District 54 continues to recommend vaccination for all individuals ages 12 and above. If your child has been vaccinated, please send a copy of the vaccination record to your school nurse. Fully vaccinated individuals without symptoms do not need to quarantine if they are exposed to a positive case.  If you do not wish to share your children’s COVID-19 vaccination information with us, that is your choice. However, without proof of vaccination, we will consider your children unvaccinated.
  • Visitors: All adults in our school buildings — staff members, parents, volunteers, visitors, etc. — will be required to wear face masks at school, regardless of their vaccination status. In this way, trusted adults will model and reinforce the importance of helping keep each other safe and healthy.
  • Cleaning and Disinfecting: District 54 will maintain a continued emphasis on cleaning and disinfecting protocols, including hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette.

The prevention strategies outlined in this letter are subject to change based on updated guidance from the state, vaccination coverage levels in our community, or transmission levels within the school or community.
These COVID-19 mitigation strategies are designed to help keep your children healthy and in school, but will not work without your support. We realize that many of these issues have become politicized and polarizing. None of this matters to us. We are laser-focused on the health and safety of our students, our staff and their families.
With your support we can re-engage with the best instructional practices including small group instruction, sharing of materials, movement throughout the day and opportunities for personal connection. We can also return to activities and events that enrich students’ school experiences including clubs, extracurriculars, athletics as well as school and PTA hosted events.
Should you have any additional questions, please refer to our website at sd54.org/covidfaq or contact your child’s school principal.
